What lengths do people go to to protect the pipes that go through the floor, and ensure a watertight seal?

Just sealant? Or something more sturdy?

I've been considering using flanged tank connectors, or something like that, to give some extra protection around the holes. And running the pipes through those, and filling around the pipe, in the connector pipe, with something like expanding foam. Or just more sealant.
Thoughts?
